What should you do when your hosting account runs out of storage?

A full hosting account can stop uploads, backups, updates, email delivery, database writes, and temporary file creation. Check the storage report in the hosting panel and confirm whether the limit covers files, databases, mailboxes, or all of them together. Keep the site in maintenance mode only if normal operation risks losing orders or form submissions.

Look for old backup archives, staging copies, cache directories, large logs, unused installations, and full mailboxes. Download anything that must be retained, verify the copy, and remove the server version through the tool that created it. Deleting cache from its plugin or panel is safer than removing unfamiliar files by hand.

Do not delete active database files or system directories to free space. WordPress media may have several generated sizes for each original image, and a cleanup plugin can remove files still referenced by the theme. Take a current external backup before any broad cleanup and test pages afterward.

Once the account has working space again, find the source of growth. Set retention limits for backups and logs, move mail or archives to appropriate services, and optimize new images before upload. Upgrade the plan when the retained site data genuinely exceeds the current capacity, leaving enough free space for updates and temporary operations.
