How do you increase upload_max_filesize for WordPress?

The upload_max_filesize PHP setting controls the maximum size of one uploaded file. A related setting, post_max_size, must be at least as large because the entire form submission passes through it. Memory, execution time, web server limits, and application settings can also restrict large uploads.

Use the hosting panel’s PHP editor or PHP options screen to change the values for the correct domain. Some hosts allow changes in a local configuration file, while others lock the settings at the server level. WordPress shows the effective upload limit in the Media upload screen and in Site Health.

Choose a limit based on the files the site should accept. Very large video or archive uploads can fill storage, time out, or expose a form to abuse. For media, compress images and use a video platform or object storage when appropriate. For migrations, SFTP or a server-side import method is often more reliable than uploading through WordPress.

After changing the setting, verify the effective value and test with a safe file slightly below the limit. If WordPress still shows the old number, clear server configuration caches or ask the host which layer controls it. Keep public upload forms restricted by file type, size, permissions, and malware screening where available.
