What is Cloudflare, and does a small website need it?

Cloudflare can provide authoritative DNS, a reverse proxy, content caching, traffic filtering, and other network services in front of a website. When proxying is enabled, visitors connect to Cloudflare first. Cloudflare then serves cached content or sends the request to the origin hosting server.

A small site can benefit from faster delivery of static files, reduced origin traffic, basic denial-of-service protection, and centralized DNS management. The service also adds another configuration layer. Incorrect SSL modes, cache rules, firewall settings, or DNS records can make troubleshooting harder than a direct hosting setup.

The free plan covers many simple sites. The origin still needs secure hosting, WordPress updates, backups, and application-level protection, and dynamic pages and logged-in sessions continue to depend on it. Email traffic generally follows DNS mail records and does not pass through the website proxy, so preserve those settings separately.

Use Cloudflare when its DNS, caching, or security features solve a real need and someone can maintain the configuration. Record the origin address, account ownership, rules, and recovery access. A low-traffic local site can also run perfectly well without it if the host already provides suitable performance and protection.
