What do Cloudflare errors 522 and 524 mean?

Error 522 means Cloudflare could not complete a timely connection to the origin server. The origin may be offline, overloaded, incorrectly addressed, or dropping Cloudflare traffic in a firewall. Network routing problems between Cloudflare and the host can also prevent the connection from completing.
Error 524 means Cloudflare connected to the origin, but the origin did not return an HTTP response within the allowed time. Slow database queries, large reports, imports, backups, external API calls, or exhausted server workers can keep the request open too long. Retrying under load can make the queue worse.
For a 522, verify the origin IP, web-server availability, ports, firewall rules, and Cloudflare allowlisting. For a 524, inspect application and database logs at the matching timestamp, measure the slow operation, and check CPU, memory, and worker usage. The distinction helps direct the investigation to connection setup or response processing.
Move long jobs out of normal web requests, process work in batches, and return progress through a separate status check. Optimize slow queries and increase server capacity when legitimate concurrent work requires it. Raising timeouts at one layer does not fix an origin that is stuck or consistently overloaded.
