How can you check the PHP version on your hosting account?

Most hosting panels show the active PHP version in a section named PHP Manager, MultiPHP Manager, Select PHP Version, or something similar. Confirm the version for the specific domain because one account can assign different versions to different sites. The panel’s default version may not match the version used by the domain you are checking.

In WordPress, open Tools, Site Health, Info, and expand the Server section. This displays the PHP version that handles WordPress requests. It is often the quickest option when the dashboard still works. Some managed hosts also show the version in a site overview or development tools page.

Developers can check from the command line with php -v, but that reports the command-line version. The web server may use another PHP installation. A temporary phpinfo() page reveals the web environment, although it exposes detailed server information and should be deleted immediately after the check.

Record the current version before changing it and check the requirements of WordPress, the theme, and important plugins. A supported PHP release receives security fixes and usually performs better than an obsolete one. If the host offers only outdated versions, ask about its upgrade schedule or plan a move to a maintained environment.
