How can you find the largest files on a hosting account?

Start with the disk usage tool in the hosting panel. It usually shows which top-level directories consume the most space, allowing you to narrow the search before opening File Manager. Some file managers can sort by size, although they may calculate directory totals slowly on a large account.

With SSH access, commands such as du can summarize directory sizes and find can list large files. Run them inside the account directory and avoid scanning the whole server without permission. Managed hosts may provide their own storage report or support team if command-line access is unavailable.

Large files often include backup archives, raw videos, debug logs, database exports, email attachments, and cached assets. The largest directory may contain thousands of small files instead, which also affects inode usage. Confirm who created each item before deleting it. A recent archive could be the only usable backup of the site.

Move required archives to separate backup or object storage and set automatic retention rules. Rotate logs and disable debugging after troubleshooting. For media-heavy sites, serve video through a suitable media platform and optimize images on upload. Repeat the storage check regularly so growth is noticed before the account becomes full.
