How do you upload website files with the cPanel File Manager?

Open File Manager in cPanel and navigate to the domain’s confirmed document root. Create a backup of existing files before replacing anything. The upload tool can accept individual files and archives; for a complete site, uploading a compressed archive and extracting it on the server is often faster than sending thousands of small files.

After extraction, check the folder structure. The site’s main index.php or index.html must sit in the document root unless the server is configured for a subdirectory. A common mistake creates an extra nested folder, leaving the domain pointed at an empty level above the actual site.

Preserve hidden files such as .htaccess when they are part of the application. File Manager settings may need to enable “Show Hidden Files” before they appear. Confirm permissions after uploading and avoid granting broad write access as a shortcut. Standard file and directory permissions usually work, although the host may have specific requirements.

Test the site immediately and inspect any server error message or PHP log. Remove the uploaded archive if it contains a full copy of the site, since leaving it in a public directory creates an unnecessary download risk. For repeated deployments or large projects, SFTP, SSH, or a version-controlled deployment process is more reliable than manual uploads.
